Chamara gets bail in one case, further remanded in another

New Democratic Front (NDF) MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, arrested over the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to the Uva Provincial Council and produced before the Fort Magistrate Court yesterday (08), was granted bail, but he was further remanded until 21 April by the Badulla Magistrate, who is hearing another case agasint him.

Both cases were filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

MP Dassanayake has been accused of misappropriating Rs. 1 million of the Uva Provincial Council in 2016. Considering the submissions made by the prosecution and the defence, the Chief Magistrate ordered MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake to be released on a Rs. 50,000 cash bond and two sureties amounting to Rs. 2 million each.

An overseas travel ban was also imposed on him. The case will be taken up for hearing once again on 17 June.

Dassanayake was taken into custody on 27 March, over three separate corruption-related cases.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court previously granted Dassanayake bail in two of the cases but ordered him to be remanded over a third charge.
