Cash-strapped govt. to launch USD 56 mn advertising campaign
Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has said that Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa had undertaken to grant USD 56 mn for an international advertising campaign to attract tourists to Sri Lanka.
In a statement issued yesterday, Minister Ranatunga said that he had received the assurance in this regard at a meeting chaired by Minister Basil Rajapaksa on 21 Feb. The Tourism Ministry said that the government is in the process of implementing a major advertising project as decided last year. According to the ministry USD 56 mn would be made available in the second quarter of this year.
Among the 16 countries targeted by the proposed campaign are the US, the UK, Russia, Japan, South Korea and India. Sri Lanka experiencing the worst ever economic downturn is trying to attract foreign tourists. (SF)
