Cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunawardena said yesterday that he had asked President Ranil Wickremesinghe to make public transport an essential service.

Addressing the post-Cabinet press briefing in Colombo he said that some groups were organising a campaign on November 22 to disrupt the IMF programme. This could also mean disrupting operations of the expressways, he said.

“So, I asked the President on Monday (20) to make public transport an essential service. You know what happens to people who do not adhere to laws governing essential services,” he said.
