Austrian footballer scores fastest International goal in history

Published

Christoph Baumgartner's goal was a second faster than Lukas Podolski's strike for Germany against Ecuador in 2013 (BBC)

Christoph Baumgartner scored after six seconds to record the fastest ever goal in international football as Austria beat Slovakia in Bratislava.

The 24-year-old midfielder skipped past three challenges from the kick-off and fired a low shot past home goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

His effort was a second quicker than Lukas Podolski’s strike for Germany against Ecuador in 2013.

Andreas Weimann’s late goal confirmed victory for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

Baumgartner’s remarkable effort was almost equalled later on Saturday evening when Florian Wirtz put Germany ahead in France, with a 25-yard effort that appeared to deflect off Dayot Upamecano before clipping the underside of the crossbar on its way in.

Meanwhile, Austria, who host Turkey in Vienna on Tuesday, have now won four consecutive matches as they build for this summer’s Euros in Germany.

And they could hardly have had a better start in the Slovakian capital with the home fans looking on in complete disbelief as RB Leipzig’s Baumgartner wheeled away to celebrate with his team-mates.

His goal was also two seconds faster than when Davide Gualtieri stunned England by scoring for San Marino after eight seconds in a World Cup qualifier in 1993 and Christian Benteke’s goal for Belgium against Gibraltar in 2017.

The earliest goal ever recorded in the Premier League was by Shane Long for Southampton 7.69 seconds into their meeting with Watford in 2019.

Roy Makaay holds that distinction in the Champions League, finding the net for Bayern Munich 10.12 seconds into the second leg of their last-16 tie against Real Madrid in March.

Meanwhile, in February, Croydon FC’s Ryan Hall scored a stunning goal straight from kick off in their game against Cockfosters in the London Senior Trophy that was timed at 2.31 seconds by the non-league side.

However, Guinness World Records could not confirm that it was an official record for the fastest goal scored from kick-off as they do not monitor goals outside of professional football.

Simarjeet and Gaikwad keep Chennai Super King’s campaign alive

Sanju Samson got Ravindra Jadeja out obstructing the field (BCCI)

Chennai Super Kings signed off their home league campaign with a win, giving themselves a decent chance of coming back to Chennai for the last two playoff games. Despite losing their 11th toss out of 13 and being asked to field in the afternoon heat 40 hours after finishing their last match in Ahmedabad, the CSK bowlers used a slow pitch expertly to keep Rajasthan Royals down to 141, which they chased down with relative ease.

The slow pitch was right up the home bowlers’ alley, and they kept Royals quiet in a wicketless powerplay after which Simarjeet Singh kept getting wickets every time Royals tried to push back. Royals never really succeeded in mounting an attack, which CSK’s New Zealand batters, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell, successfully did to put their chase on course with a Shivam Dube putting them on top.

The win took CSK up to 14 points from 13 matches, level with Sunrisers Hyderabad who have a game in hand, and two points clear of the nearest challengers outside the top four. Royals suffered their third straight defeat, which will be a cause for concern for them going into the playoffs, especially with Jos Buttler not expected to be available for the final week.

These are the two slowest teams in the first two overs of the IPL. They like to suss the pitch out before they start attacking. Royals stayed true to form, scoring just seven off the first two, but they couldn’t kick on even after that with Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana and Shardul Thakur giving them nothing to drive. Their 42 for 0 was the slowest wicketless powerplay of IPL 2024, one run behind their 43 for 0 against Punjab Kings, but that came in a small chase.

With Royals’ only left-hand top-order batter gone, Jadeja rattled through his four overs for just 24 runs to go with Theekshana’s four overs for 28. Sanju Samson just kept looking for singles while Riyan Parag tried the odd boundary. It seemed as if Royals had decided they needed to get somewhere around 160 and not aim too high.Even to get to 160, they would need two a ball for the last six overs after getting to 89 for 2 in 14 overs, which is when the spinners bowled out. Royals were banking on cashing in on pace, but just when they tried to go hard they handed Simarjeet another wicket: Samson caught at mid-off. Again Royals were pushed back.

Deshpande and Thakur stuck to their plans in the death overs, and Royals never got the big overs. Only Parag’s 47 off 35 took them to 141, which was 23 less than the lowest total successfully defended in this IPL. Royals attacked just 30 balls in their innings, the sixth-lowest figure this season in non-all-out innings when setting a target.

CSK have been the only team slower than Royals in the early goings but they were mindful of not letting the bowlers settle into their defence. Ravindra flicked Sandeep Sharma for a six over midwicket in the second over, and went after compatriot Trent Boult in the third. Even though R Ashwin got Ravindra out in the fourth, Mitchell kept up the intent. Their 56 for 1 was their fourth-highest powerplay of this IPL.In the middle overs, Royals clawed their way back. Yuzvendra Chahal got Mitchell, the spinners kept Moeen Ali and Ruturaj Gaikwad quiet, Moeen got out for 10 off 13, and 39 balls went without a boundary. Still it was 50 needed off seven overs. This was when Ashwin came on to bowl his last over with Dube on strike. Dube took the veteran spinner on for 6, 4, 4, with a leg-side wide in between, and while Ashwin came back with Dube’s wicket, CSK needed 35 off the last six.

Captain Gaikwad stayed true to his anchor role for this chase, and saw his team home despite Jadeja getting himself out obstructing the field.

Brief scores:
Rajasthan Royals 141/5 in 20 overs (Riyan Parag 47*, Dhruv Jurel 28, Yashasvi Jaiswal 24, Jos Butler 21; Simarjeet Singh 3-26, Tushar Deshpande 2-30) lost to Chennai Super Kings 145/5 in 18.2 overs (Ruturaj Gaikwad 42*, Rachin Ravindra 27, Daryl Mitchell  22 ; Ravichandran Ashwin 2-35, Yuzvendra Chahal 1-22, Nandre Burger 1-21) by 5 wickets.

Bennett, Raza seal consolation win for Zimbabwe

Brian Bennett got Zimbabwe off to a strong start (BCB)

Brian Benett’s all-round show and Sikandar Raza’s unbeaten 72 helped Zimbabwe seal a consolation win in the T20I series against Bangladesh. The visitors won by eight wickets in the fifth T20I to reduce the margin of the series defeat to 4-1.

Bennett bossed both powerplays. He struck a breezy 70 in the chase after he took two wickets in the Bangladesh powerplay, finishing with 2-20. Raza finished the game with his first half-century on tour after four low scores.

Mahmudullah’s 54 kept Bangladesh in shape after they slipped to 15 for 3. It was his second half-century this year, as he strengthened his case to be part of Bangladesh’s middle-order for the T20 World Cup. He shared a 69-run fourth wicket stand with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who also showed some form with his 36. Zimbabwe’s bowling, however, kept the home side in check, especially in the first few overs when they bowled two maiden overs.

Bennett and Blessing Muzarabani stifled Bangladesh during powerplay. Muzarabani got Tanzid Hossain to top edge a slog in the second over, before Bennett removed Soumya Sarkar and Towhid Hridoy in successive overs. Sean Willams took the simple catch from a Soumya dab, at point. Hridoy was caught behind, unable to correctly judge the bounce of the ball as he went for the square cut. Bennett and Muzarabani also bowled a maiden each as the home side slipped to 15 for 3 in the fifth over.

Mahmudullah countered Zimbabwe’s dominance with three fours in the first four balls he faced. He started with a sweep, before hitting Bennett for a cover drive and finishing with a slice through point. He added 69 runs for the fourth wicket with Najmul Hossain Shanto. Luke Jongwe dropped Shanto on 25 at short third-man after the batter miscued a hoick against Wellington Masakadza.

Shanto slammed Masakadza for his first six but his attempt at a repeat off the next ball went straight to Ryan Burl at deep midwicket. Mahmudullah launched Bennett over long-on for his only six, as he added 39 runs with Shakib Al Hasan for the fifth wicket.

Johnathan Campbell’s brilliant running catch from deep midwicket cut short Shakib’s 17-ball 21, before Muzarabani had Mahmudullah caught at cover for 54.

After impressing with the ball, Bennett got Zimbabwe off to a flyer with the bat. He struck Mahedi Hasan for two fours in the first over. He then smacked Mahedi for two sixes and a four in his next over, before hammering Saifuddin for two more fours in the fourth over.

Shakib getting Marumani stumped in the fifth over slowed down Zimbabwe before Raza slammed Saifuddin over midwicket for his first six. Bennett went past his previous best in T20Is with a six off Rishad Hossain, before reaching his fifty in the 12th over.

He struck two more sixes to take his tally to five sixes, before holing out to Saifuddin for 70 off 49 balls. He also struck five fours.

Raza, who supported Bennett in the 74-run second wicket stand, continued with the big hits after the opener’s departure. He struck Saifuddin for two fours in the 16th over. It left Zimbabwe with 32 needed off the last four overs. He reached his fifty off 41 balls, reaching the mark with a four off a pull.

Raza then deposited Saifuddin for a huge six over midwicket, following it with a six over long-off, and a four. He finished on an unbeaten 72 off 46 balls with four sixes and six fours. Campbell was unbeaten on eight runs, hitting the winning runs in the 19th over.

Brief scores:
Zimbabwe
158 for 2 in 18.3 overs (Sikandar Raza 72*, Brian Bennett 70;  Shakib Al Hassan 1-9, Mohammad Saiffudeen 1-55) beat Bangladesh157 for 6 in 20 overs  (M Mahmudullah 54, Najmul Hossain Shanto 36, Jaker Ali 24*; Brian  Bennett 2-20, Blessing Muzarabani 2-22, Wellington Masakadza 1-23, Luke Jongwe 1-33) by eight wickets
