By Saman Indrajith
Anuradhapura District SLPP MP Uddhika Premaratne, on Tuesday (8), told Parliament that he had brought 10 kilos of maize to be handed over to the Parliament kitchen to be used for the MPs’ meal as a substitute for imported lentils.
Participating in the debate on the Central Bank report at the time of the adjournment of the House, the MP said that his intention was to promote farmers’ produce and its members should consume maize produced locally instead of imported lentils.
He thanked the kitchen officials for substituting maize instead of lentils and said that yesterday MPs consumed maize for lunch in the Parliament canteen.
Premaratne said the country spent a large amount of money on importing dhal from India.
Premaratne said as an MP representing the people of Anuradhapura, he was sad to note that today people in his district suffered without water.
He said that despite almost 2,600 irrigation tanks, the farmers in Anuradhapura were struggling without water for their crops.
He also noted that around two deaths had been reported every week in the Anurad-hapura District due to elephant attacks.
