Ajahn Brahmavamso in Sri Lanka on a very busy schedule

Published

The greatly anticipated and planned for visit and nine days stay of Ajahn Brahmavamso is in its first week. Since his arrival on May 22 from Australia, he has been fully occupied with spreading the Dhamma in this island of ours. His itinerary was meticulously planned by the Ajahn Brahm Society of Sri Lanka (ABSSL) under the direction of Ven Mettavihari.

Meditation Retreat: The nine day meditation retreat at Bandarawela for 157 persons comprising 55 bhikkhus, 44 bhikkhunis and 58 lay persons is ongoing at the National Holiday Resort managed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Board. Meditators are housed in specially constructed temporary tents. Group sessions began on May 23 under the direct guidance of Ajahn Brahmavamso. Opportunities to receive personal guidance from Ajahn Brahm at appropriate interventions are also accommodated. The retreat ends on May 28.

Forum for Business/Professional Persons: The next item on the visiting Venerable Thera’s busy schedule is the forum for invited participants from the business/professional community of Sri Lanka. This will be at the Galle Face Hotel, Colombo on May 29. It is both innovative and unique; the first time that professionals and businessmen have been invited for discussion and giving ear to what the Buddha said to persons of this category, which remains relevant even at present. Ajahn Brahmavamso with his Oxford University education, experience in life and as a world renowned meditating monk, is certainly the most unique person to guide such a forum.

A total of 115 persons will be beneficiaries on this day. Each of the two sessions lasts 90 minutes, within which direct discussion with the Thera will be accommodated

Dhamma Talk to the Public: Justifiably considered to be the highlight of the Venerable Thera’s all too short visit to Sri Lanka is his making himself available to address the public. This much looked forward to event by the many, is on Tuesday May 30 at the BMICH starting at 7.00 am and ending at 11.00 am. The ABSSL anticipates the presence of 5,000 persons from the free passes collected from venues made known in mid-March.

Suitable arrangements have been made to accommodate all pass holders in the main BMICH hall and in Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Halls A and B. Ajahn Brahm will deliver a dhamma talk in the main hall, then another talk followed by a meditation session in Hall A. The focus when he is in Hall B will be answering questions which were already perused and collated. All halls are live–linked enabling persons to see the Thera while listening to him. Ajahn Brahm’s Dhamma talk in the main hall and key elements of questions asked will be supported by summary translation in Sinhala by Ven Damita.

Request: The Ajahn Brahm Society of Sri Lanka kindly requests the public to be seated according to passes by 6.45 am on May 30, to enable the smooth commencement and progression of the programme. Participants are advised to wear face masks and bring their drinking water.

R. M. A. L. Ratnayake

Chairman of the Election (EC) Commission R. M. A. L. Ratnayake said yesterday that the EC would direct the political parties and independent groups that have secured absolute majorities in local government bodies to name the heads of those institutions.

The ruling NPP and the Opposition parties are vying for control of the hung local councils including the Colombo MC. Both the NPP and the SJB have offered to coalesce with independent groups to muster majorities.

Ratnayake said that notifications would be sent to the General Secretaries of parties and independent groups that have won local government bodies with a majority of more than 50% of the vote.

The results of the 2025 Local Government election held on Tuesday (6) were released on Wednesday (7).

The NPP won 266 out of 339 local government institutions. The SJB and the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi won 13 and 37 councils respectively. Independent groups and regional Tamil political parties won the other councils.

However, the winners have failed to secure more than 50% of seats in a majority of the local government institutions.Ratnayake said that the members elected to local government institutions at the ward level would be officially gazetted in the coming days.

The heads of the non-majority councils will be elected by their members. The government and the Opposition are accusing each other of using financial inducements to make some councilors switch their allegiance ahead of the election of the heads of the hung local councils.

The NPP has said it is confident of forming stable administrations in 134 local councils, but the Opposition is of the view that the NPP will not be able to do so in about 186 councils.

SC rejects Ranawaka’s appeal for dismissal of case against him

The Supreme Court yesterday (8) turned down an appeal filed by former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, seeking the dismissal of a case against him and three others by the Attorney General over a road accident that took place in Rajagiriya in 2016.

This decision was announced by Supreme Court Justice Yasantha Kodagoda, with the concurrence of Chief Justice Murdu Fernando and Justice Gamini Amarasekera.

They ruled that the appeal lacked merit and directed the High Court to proceed with the trial.

The Attorney General filed the indictment on charges including concealing evidence regarding the alleged hit-and-run incident where the vehicle the former Minister was travelling in collided with a motorcycle in Rajagiriya, causing life-threatening injuries to its rider, and the alleged fabrication of evidence related to the accident.

The Supreme Court ordered the Colombo High Court to take up the indictment filed against the defendants for examination.
