Rough seas and surges off the coast from Mannar to Galle

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 13 February 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Rathnapura, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts during the afternoon or night. Mainly fair weather will prevail elsewhere over the island.

Winds will be north-easterly and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (40-45) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Colombo via Puttalam and in sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the Island may be slight to moderate.

Near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Galle via Puttalam and Colombo may experience rough seas and surges due to increased wave period.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, North central, Southern and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning.

Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-central, Eastern and Northwestern provinces and in Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fairly Heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in the Northern, North-central, and Northwestern provinces and in Trincomalee district.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere after 2.00 p.m.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-central, Eastern provinces and in Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts from today evening. A few showers will occur in the Uva and Northwestern provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places elsewhere during evening or night.

There is a possibility of ground frost at some places in the Nuwara-Eliya district in the early hours of the morning.

Mainly dry weather will prevail in the most parts of the island.
