SLT-MOBITEL announces “significant enhancement of its fibre network”

Published

SLT-MOBITEL announced last week that it was revolutionizing connectivity across the country by unveiling significant enhancements to its fibre networks with ultra-high speed and lower latency navigating Sri Lanka’s digital transformation.

“SLT-Mobitel Fibre aims at providing superior dependable data connectivity and driving the adoption of high-speed broadband in the country, enhancing customers’ experience while taking proactive steps to ensure futuristic global connectivity,” the company said.

The world is connected digitally in more ways than ever before, and technology is everything. Nations and societies recognize the importance of keeping abreast with cutting-edge technology and high-speed connectivity as among the most essential components for growth; especially vital for an emerging digital economy to boost development, healthcare and education, the company explained.

“SLT-MOBITEL as the National ICT Solutions Provider is helping to shape the future of our nation, empowering and improving the quality of life for all citizens. Unleashing the power of fibre technology, SLT-Mobitel Fibre is building fibre networks that are robust, with unmatched speed, offering users innovative services via multiple devices, and thus enhancing user experience with endless possibilities and unlimited opportunities, the release said.

“SLT-Mobitel Fibre customers can now benefit from an unmatched data capacity and service reliability with exciting and uninterrupted download speeds of up to 100 to 1000 Mbps,” the release added.

“With the pandemic, Sri Lanka is witnessing an explosive growth in data usage due to higher data consumption from those working from home and also for online education,” it said. “SLT-Mobitel Fibre is another step in the company’s commitment to the nation, addressing the need for convenience and peace of mind from customers, as they navigate their lives in the new normal.”

The release explained that today’s homes are increasingly filled with a range of smart devices, each of which uses up bandwidth to connect to the internet. From smartphones, gaming systems and smart televisions to computers, tablets and even video doorbells, these devices need ample bandwidth to work well. Problems arise when a residence’s bandwidth is insufficient — especially when all of a home’s connected devices are working at once.

“In this context, SLT-Mobitel Fibre is a game-changer,” the release said. “The ultra-high speed connections provide cutting-edge technologies – which opens up a host of new opportunities for customers. SLT-MOBITEL offers strong, reliable, superfast broadband that is ideal for high-definition video streaming, heavy file downloads and uploads in a multi-device environment.”

“With SLT-Mobitel Fibre, customers are assured of superior data connectivity, ability to access multiple devices with no lagging and unlimited endless entertainment with exciting speeds backed by unmatched service reliability.”

The RTSL Board for 2025/26

Strengthening its voice in service and fellowship, Round Table Sri Lanka officially launched its national magazine – Table Talk and new official website (www.rtsrilanka.com), marking a significant milestone in its continuing journey. The dual launch reflects a deliberate and strategic effort to strengthen communication, preserve institutional memory, and enhance visibility both nationally and internationally.

Founded in 1993, Round Table Sri Lanka (RTSL) is part of the global Round Table movement, an international network of young professionals committed to community service, leadership development, and fellowship across borders. Over more than three decades, RTSL has grown into a dynamic and respected national body, comprising multiple Tables across the island and contributing actively to the regional and global Tabling community.

“The publication is more than a collection of articles. It is presented as a living archive of the RTSL’s journey, capturing stories of service, camaraderie, and growth,” said Dilanka Mannakkara, President – Round Table Sri Lanka.

The National Editor – Pasan Weerasinghe similarly reflects on the importance of documenting not just formal achievements, but also the human stories, humour, and shared experiences that define the tabling spirit.

The 2024/25 period represented a landmark chapter in the RTSL’s history. Sri Lanka hosted the Asia South Pacific Region Annual General Meeting, welcoming approximately 120 Tablers from across the region, highlighting the country’s organisational strength, hospitality, and administrative capability. From fellowship events to formal governance sessions, the AGM demonstrated unity, professionalism, and a clear sense of purpose.

In late November 2025, when severe floods affected communities across Sri Lanka, RTSL responded with urgency and structure, delivering and distributing more than 5,000 meals and 17,000 ration packs, and raising more than LKR 20 million in funds in addition to substantial in-kind contributions. The relief effort involved early monitoring, coordinated fundraising, on-the-ground logistics, and sustained distribution across affected districts, demonstrating RTSL’s commitment to service, which extends beyond fellowship into tangible national impact.

Oil prices jump above $100 for first time in four years

Oil facilities in Tehran were hit by airstrikes at the weekend

Global oil prices have jumped above $100 (£75.11) a barrel for the first time since 2022 as the escalating US-Israeli war with Iran has fuelled fears of prolonged disruption to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran on Sunday named Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father Ali Khamenei as Supreme Leader, signalling that a week into the conflict hardliners remain in charge of the country.

The US and Israel launched fresh waves of airstrikes across Iran over the weekend, hitting multiple targets including oil depots.

Major disruption to energy supplies from the region threatens to push up prices for consumers and businesses around the world.

Early on Monday in Asia, Brent crude was around 15.5% higher at $107.16, while Nymex light sweet was up by more than 17% at $106.77.

Stock markets in the Asia-Pacific region fell sharply in early trading on Monday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 index down by more than 5% and the ASX 200 in Australia more than 3.5% lower.

Many in the markets predicted that oil would hit the $100 a barrel mark this week.

In the event it took about a minute to jump 10%, and then another 15 minutes to rise a further 10% in early Asian trading.

Last week the markets had been relatively relaxed about the seeming nightmare scenario for millions of barrels of crude and liquefied natural gas trapped in the Gulf, unable or unwilling to transit the Strait of Hormuz.

But the escalations over the weekend, alongside scenes of destruction of energy infrastructure both in Iran and across the Gulf, saw the markets take rapid fright.

The question now is where does this go? Some analysts argue that if the shutdown in the strait lasts until the end of March, we could see record oil prices above $150 a barrel.

The existing rise is likely to further increase petrol prices, and those of important derivative products such as jet fuel and vital precursors for fertilisers.

The physical supplies from the Gulf are mainly consumed in Asia.

Already however there are signs that Asian consumers are bidding up prices for US gas, with some tankers originally heading for Europe turning around in the mid-Atlantic.

US President Donald Trump responded to the jump in prices by saying that short term rises were a “small price to pay” for removing Iran’s nuclear threat.

His energy secretary told US broadcasters on Sunday that Israel, not the US, was targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure, amid some concern about rising domestic pump prices caused by the war.
