A long-awaited expansion of the Mama Papa Home in Kalutara became a reality on 29 November, with the opening of the newly built Hygiene Wing donated by Switzerland’s Brighter Life Foundation. The facility was inaugurated by Archbishop of Colombo, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.

Brighter Life Foundation President Heinz Pauli attended the event as Guest of Honour, joined by long-time supporters of the Home, including former Swiss Deputy Ambassador to Sri Lanka Rudolf Gauhl, Hiu Bandaranayake, and other Foundation representatives.

Cardinal Ranjith, recalling the origins of the Home, said its founder Rita Perera first approached him decades ago in Payagala seeking purpose after widowhood. He had encouraged her to visit a special ward at Nagoda Hospital where homeless elderly persons were being cared for. “Years later, I learned that something remarkable had taken place,” he said. “Rita Perera, who had once been a Reverend Sister, had founded the Marcsri Home and was dedicating herself to caring for those in need.”

He expressed gratitude to the Brighter Life Foundation for its sustained support and for funding the new Hydyne Wing, which strengthens the Home’s care environment and services.

The Mama Papa Home currently accommodates about 40 residents, providing personalised therapies for individuals who are physically or mentally partially able.

Pauli praised the Cardinal for his long-standing dedication to the Home and thanked Rev. Fr. Jude Chrishman, Director of MarcSri Homes Kalutara, and his staff for their “tireless work in caring for people with disabilities.” He affirmed that the Foundation would “continue to be a loyal and reliable partner” in the years ahead.

Gauhl noted that the new wing includes spacious sanitary facilities and a dedicated laundry drying room designed to meet the needs of children.

The opening ceremony also featured two cultural performances by children from the Home’s Special Education Unit, marking what organisers described as a new chapter in its service to differently-abled children.
