Three wounded in latest shooting: Police detain over 700
35 lives lost in 58 incidents of gun violence so far this year
An unidentified gunman opened fire on a three-wheeler at Suduwella, Kosgama, in the early hours of yesterday (06) causing injuries to three persons. The wounded included a gangster, identified as Kotahara Podda.
Police identified the other wounded persons as a 30-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter. Local police said they were returning home from a musical show when the pillion rider fired at the three-wheeler.
The injured have been admitted to the Avissawella Hospital for treatment.
Fifty-eight incidents of gun violence has claimed 35 lives so far this year.
The Kosgama shooting took place in the wake of cordon and search operations carried out in the Kandana, Wattala and Ragama police areas, following the recent shooting incidents.
A gunman targeted Sameera Manahara, former Private Secretary to the late Minister Mangala Samaraweera, near the Kandana public market, on 03 July. Although he survived with gunshot injuries, Upali Amunuwila, accompanying him, died in the incident. On the same day, unidentified gunmen shot dead a person called ‘Army Upul’, at Batuwatta, Ragama.
During operations conducted in the Kandana, Wattala and Ragama areas, approximately 300 persons were detained for questioning. Meanwhile, police carried out search operations in the Galle, Matara and Elpitiya Police Divisions in the Southern Province over the weekend where over 400 persons were detained.

The remarks were made by Deputy Registrar of the Malwathu Maha Viharaya Chapter of the Siyamopali Maha Nikaya, Rajakiya Panditha Darshanapathi Venerable Mahawela Rathanapala Thero, Deputy Registrar of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siyamopali Maha Nikaya & Chief Incumbent of the historic Badulu Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Dr.Muruddeniye Dhammarathana Thero and Diyawadana Nilame of the historic Kandy Sri Dalada Maligawa, . Nilanga Dela, during a meeting with the President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat this morning (11).
The discussions focused on relief and resettlement activities for communities affected in the Kandy district.
The Diyawadana Nilame highlighted the role that the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic can play in supporting resettlement efforts.
In support of the rebuilding initiative, the historic Sri Dalada Maligawa also made a financial contribution to the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund.
Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, was also present at the meeting.

Cabinet green light to obtain a grant from the Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund for post – disaster relief and rehabilitation activities
On a request made by the government of Sri Lanka, the Asian Development Bank has given its concurrence to provide a grant of United States dollars 3 million under Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund.
It is expected to supply materials required for providing essential life security services for the communities affected, from the said grant.
Therefore, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to the proposal submitted by the President as the Minister of Finance, Plan Implementation and Economic Development to enter into the relevant agreements with the Asian Development Bank to obtain the said grant.
