The Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry yesterday (03) declared that plantation companies would have to pay Rs 1,700 as minimum daily wage promised by the government to workers.

The Ministry issued a statement hours after the Court of Appeal refused to grant an interim injunction preventing the implementation of the gazette notification issued by the Minister of Labour, which stipulates a minimum daily wage for plantation workers.

The order was issued when a petition filed by plantation companies seeking a writ order invalidating the relevant gazette notification was taken up for consideration.

However, the court directed that notice be issued to the Minister of Labour Manusha Nanayakkara and other respondents of the petition to appear before the court on 26 June.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced the Rs 1,700 minimum daily wage on May Day at a meeting organised by the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) at Thalawakele.

Plantation companies have declared that they aren’t in a position to increase the minimum daily wage to Rs 1,700. However, both Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Nanayakkara and CWC strongman Minister Jeevan Thondaman insist that the new minimum wage has been effective from May Day. (SF)

at 3.30 p.m. on 22 March 2026, valid for 23 March 2026.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in
Anuradhapura, Mannar and Vavuniya districts.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
