Fairly heavy showers likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces

Weather forecast for 16 April 2024 issued at 12.00 noon on 15 April 2024

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Eastern,  Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Southern, North-central  and North-western provinces.

Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces.

Winds will be south-easterly or variable in direction and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph.

The sea areas around the island will be slight but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Showers may occur in Batticaloa, Ampara and Hambantota districts during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island after 1.00 pm. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern
and Southern provinces and in Monaragala district during the day time.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.


Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
