Showers in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northwestern and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara and Mullaitivu districts

Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 18 May 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northwestern and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara and Mullaitivu districts during the evening or night. A few showers may occur in Western and Northwestern coastal areas and in Jaffna district during the morning too.

Winds will be south-westerly over sea area around the island and speed will be (20-30) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (40-45) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be fairly rough at times.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The general public are warned that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in Northern, Eastern and North-central provinces and Monaragala and Hambantota districts

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED

Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Central and Uva provinces during the morning.

Showers may occur in Southern and Western provinces and Puttalam district in the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at most places of the island during the afternoon or night. Heavy rain fall about 100 mm is likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern and North-central provinces.
