Suresh no more
The Island is deeply saddened to announce the demise of one of its veteran journalists.
Suresh Perera, 59, was a colossus when it came to both his size and the quality of his work. He was unarguably a heavyweight in journalism. Close to six feet in height and easily weighing over 100 kilos, he was a man of few words, who jealously guarded his private life.
Suresh joined The Island in the mid-80s, having worked elsewhere as a journalist, and soon became a versatile reporter, capable of covering any field. He went on to become a desk head, and was functioning as The Sunday Island news editor at the time of his death.
Precision being his watchword, especially in covering Parliament and Cabinet, Suresh was much sought-after especially due to the areas he was covering and the excellent copy he wrote. There was never a case of Suresh misquoting anyone during his entire career. He was a stickler for accuracy and punctuality.
Suresh clearly showed his mettle while covering the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa during the second JVP uprising in the late 1980s and the counter-terror campaign carried out by the state. Sadly, he could not win his battle against coronavirus try as he might.
The last time we saw him in office was two weeks ago, when owing to the pandemic only a handful reported to work at The Island and Sunday Island editorials, most preferring to work online from home. Suresh was among the very few there, wearing his mask.
Suresh leaves his wife and only daughter.
His funeral took place yesterday.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.
Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.
ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

On the apparent northward relative motion of the sun, it is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka from 05th to 15th of April in this year.
The nearest areas of Sri Lanka over which the sun is overhead today (13th) are Pesalai, Mankulam and Nedunkerny about 12:11 noon.
The Pakistan Navy Ship (PNS) TAIMUR and ASLAT arrived at the Port of Colombo on a goodwill visit on 12 Apr 26.
The visiting ships were welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in
compliance with naval traditions.
The duo of ships is commanded by Captain NIAMAT SAEED KHAN (PNS TAIMUR) and Captain NADIR MATEEN AFRIDI (PNS ASLAT).
Meanwhile, the ships are expected to conduct a Bilateral Naval Exercise LION STAR V with the Sri Lanka Navy in Colombo seas.
