Seven Syrians arrested at BIA for attempting to fly to Rome with forged UAE passports

Immigration and Emigration officers at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) have arrested seven Syrians attempting to travel to Rome using forged United Arab Emirates (UAE) passports.

The suspects, having passed through airport security, were stopped at the departure counters by immigration officers who became suspicious about the authenticity of the passports. The individuals were subsequently referred to the Border Surveillance Unit (BSU).

Upon examination, BSU officials determined that the passports were forgeries, and the suspects admitted to being Syrian nationals.

It was discovered that the forged passports had been created using advanced technology, making them undetectable by electronic scanners or e-gates. An immigration officer commented that the forgeries were of such high quality that only a group of experienced officials could recognise them as fakes.

The suspects revealed that they had paid $2,000 per passport, which had been produced in Turkey.

The group consisted of three adults and four children. The suspects were handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigations.
