Prevailing heavy showers and strong winds over the south western part of the island is expected to reduce from today (06)

Showers will occur at times in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, Galle and Matara districts. Several spells of showers will occur in the North-Western province and in Matale and Anuradhapura districts.
Winds will be south-westerly and speed will be (25-35) kmph. Fairly strong winds about (40-45) kmph can be expected at times in western slopes of the central hills, Northern and North-Central provinces, and in Puttalam, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.
Wind speed may increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and sea areas off the coast extending from Hambanthota to Pottuvil. Wind speed may increase up to (45-50) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambanthota via Colombo and Galle.
The sea areas off the coast extending from Trincomalee to Puttalam via Kankasanthurai and Mannar and sea areas off the coast extending from Hambanthota to Pottuvil will be rough at times. Sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambanthota via Colombo and Galle will be fairly rough and other sea areas around the island will be moderate.
Increase of swell waves (about 2.5 – 3.0 m) can be expected in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambanthota.

Under the influence of the Easterly winds, the prevailing showery conditions over the Northern and Eastern parts of the island are expected to continue further during the next few days.
Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.
Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces. Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Eastern and Central provinces and in the Badulla and Polonnaruwa districts.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other areas of the island after 1.00p.m. Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm are likely at some places in these areas.
Strong winds of about (40-50) kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Monaragala districts.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers

70,297 persons still in safety centers
The Situation Report issued by the Disaster Management Center at 06:00AM on 16th December 2025 shows that 70,297 persons belonging to 22,338 house holds are still being housed at 731 safety centers established by the government.
The number of deaths due to the recent disastrous weather stands at 643 while 183 persons are missing.
