No eggs for Parliament canteen for past three weeks
By Saman Indrajith
Trade Minister Nalin Fernando said that eggs had not been supplied to Parliament canteen for the past two weeks.Responding to a question raised by Anuradhapura District SJB MP Rohana Bandara in parliament yesterday, the minister said that eight out of ten boutiques that used to sell eggs had now stopped selling eggs as there were no stocks in the market.
Minister Fernando said the first batch of eggs imported from India had arrived at the Colombo Port.
The Minister said the imported eggs would be released once the quality tests are conducted. It would take at least three more days to begin the distribution of the first batch of imported eggs for the bakery industry. The consignment of eggs would only be released following the completion of required inspections carried out by the Ministry of Health.
“A unanimous decision was taken through a cabinet sub-committee that eggs should be imported. That’s why we have imported shell eggs. Accordingly, the first batch of eggs arrived at the Colombo Port,” the Minister said.
“They are asking for three more days to carry out their inspections in Sri Lanka. So we gave the opportunity for that too. We have imported these eggs with all those certificates, so the people will receive these eggs by Saturday,” he said.
