Most lunch boxes and water bottles in local market unsafe for Children, warns PHIs’ union
Most lunch boxes and water bottles available in the local market contain harmful materials, warns Upul Rohana, Chairman of the Public Health Inspectors’ (PHI) Union.Rohana told the media on Thursday that a significant number of these products contained Bisphenol A (BPA), an industrial chemical used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, and metal products.
Rohana urged the public to purchase and use only plastic items carrying number 5 or the glass-and-fork symbol, which indicate the material is safe for food use.
“The number 5 on plastic denotes that it is made from polypropylene (PP), a strong, durable, and versatile material capable of withstanding higher temperatures. It is commonly used in reusable containers. Polypropylene can also be recycled into products like plastic lumber, bins, and brooms, although it is not as widely accepted as other plastics. The glass-and-fork symbol signifies that the material is food-safe, making it suitable for food and water containers as well as packaging materials,” Rohana explained.
He further noted that most water bottles sold in the local market and at roadside stalls are made from lower-grade plastics, which pose significant health risks.
“International studies have linked exposure to these plastics with hormonal imbalances, female infertility, impotence, reproductive health issues, low birth weight, and even cancer,” he stated.
Rohana strongly advised the public to use plastic products exclusively marked with the number 5 to safeguard their health and wellbeing.
