Massacre of civilians: SLMC leader wants GoSL to speak up against Israeli violations of International Law as most Arab regimes keep mum

Published

SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem MP, yesterday (19) urged the NPP government to speak up against indiscriminate Israeli attacks on Gaza.

The text of the statement: “We vehemently condemn the Israeli Zionist regime’s blatant violation of the ceasefire with yesterdays’ shocking airstrikes. Israel’s flagrant resumption of bombings claiming more than 400 lives in Gaza amidst Ramazan, shattering the two-month long ceasefire is strongly condemned. Israel has clearly unilaterally ended the first phase of the ceasefire subverting its development into the next stage of negotiations. It continues to carry out brutal attacks and ethnic cleansing on innocent civilians with no interest in peace in Gaza and the rest of the region.

We equally condemn the recent spate of attacks by the Israel targeting Yemen, Syria and Lebanon wounding civilians, including women and children, unrelenting also towards the aid workers. They continue to block aid to Gaza violating international law.

It is deeply concerning to note US’ support for Israel’s strengthened position, which only intensifies Israel’s acts of impunity. This in turn severely undermines the region’s ability to de-escalate military conflicts on the path to peace. We also call upon the Arab Leaders to urgently bring about unanimity against US policies on the Israeli Zionist regime’s actions and appeal for talks and peace negotiations.

We urge the Government of Sri Lanka to explicitly condemn the Israeli Zionists Regime’s continued violation of international laws and speak up against its acts of genocide and continued aggression and destruction in Gaza. Israel’s threat and destruction to the neighbouring sovereign countries and its violation of the UN resolutions must also be equally condemned. The GoSL should appeal to the Security Council to hold Israel accountable for violating of international laws and escalating regional tensions.”

Cabinet Spokesman and Media and Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced the government decision yesterday (13) at the post-Cabinet media briefing at the Information Department.

The Minister said that action would be taken against those responsible for the inclusion of a link to a sex website following investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department and the National Education Institute.

The SJB and several other political parties, as well as civil society groups, have accused the government of promoting an LGBTQ agenda, through the proposed education reforms.

The Opposition grouping Mahajana Handa, on Monday, made representations to the Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatta Chapter regarding the controversial reforms, while urging their intervention to halt the project.

SL to receive 10 helicopters from US

Published

on

The United States has announced that it will provide the Sri Lanka Air Force with 10 US Navy TH-57 helicopters free of charge.

The announcement was made by outgoing US Ambassador Julie Chung, who stated, on social media, that the helicopters would be transferred under the United States’ Excess Defence Articles programme. The aircraft are Bell 206 Sea Ranger helicopters previously operated by the US Navy.

US sources said that the transfer was intended to strengthen Sri Lanka’s disaster response capabilities, following the devastating cyclone that struck the island at the end of 2025 and killed more than 600 people. US officials have framed the move as a humanitarian measure aimed at improving aerial rescue and relief operations.
