Daughter of specialist doctor to be charged for verbally abusing and threatening Bribery officers
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali Jayatunga on Thursday (7) that charges would be filed against specialist doctor Maheshi Wijerathnas daughter, who verbally abused and threatened an officer and an assistant director of the Commission within court premises. This incident occurred when the case filed against the doctor was taken up and the Commission objected to granting her mother bail.
Officials representing the Commission stated that steps would be taken to file the charge sheet when the case is next called on the 9th. In response to a question raised by the Chief Magistrate regarding whether a charge sheet would also be filed against Hemali Wijerathna, the daughter of Specialist Dr. Maheshi Wijeratne, officials replied accordingly.
Presidents Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma, who appeared on behalf of the suspect currently out on bail, requested court permission for her to travel abroad for educational purposes. Granting the request, the Chief Magistrate ordered the suspect to appear before the Commission and provide a statement immediately upon her return to the country.
The Chief Magistrate said that since the officials of the Commission had not objected to the request for overseas travel, permission was granted. At a previous court appearance, the suspects counsel had submitted a motion stating that his client was prepared to unconditionally apologise to the two Commission officials in open court. However, no such apology was made or mentioned in court on Thursday (7).
