Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals LTD Managing Director M. Uvais Mohamed yesterday resigned from his post, Energy Ministry officials said.

Energy Minister Udaya Gammanpila had instructed the Ministry Secretary to remove him as the Managing Director of Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited.

Mohamed tendered his resignation to the President’s Secretary.

learns Minister Gammanpila was not happy with the initiatives taken by the Director General. It is also understood there was a cold war between them.

While some claimed that one of the reasons the government was compelled to increase fuel prices was due to some lackadaisical attitudes of officials However, Cabinet spokesman Minister Dullas Alahapperuma yesterday said fuel prices were increased as a measure to address the foreign exchange crisis.

The Cabinet spokesman said that a discussion would be held at the next Cabinet meeting on the concessions to be provided to the public who have been severely affected due to the latest hike in fuel prices.

He said the decision to increase fuel prices was made following discussions with the Central Bank and the Finance Ministry.

“Fuel prices were increased as one of the steps to address the foreign exchange crisis,” he said.

Alahapperuma also recalled that when the late politician Mangala Samaraweera had proposed a fuel pricing formula, the proposal had been ridiculed.

Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology
at 3.30 p.m. on 22 March 2026, valid for 23 March 2026.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in
Anuradhapura, Mannar and Vavuniya districts.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
