Matt Kuhnemann’s Sri Lanka tour in jeopardy after thumb injury
Matt Kuhnemann is in serious doubt for the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka after the recalled spinner hurt his thumb playing for Brisbane Heat.
The left-arm offspinner ran from the ground in agony on Thursday night after attempting to field a Matthew Wade straight drive off his own bowling.
The injury occurred to his non-bowling right hand but appeared to be significant and left Heat and Test team-mate Marnus Labuschagne visibly distressed post-game.
“I just heard about Matt Kuhnemann, so that’s pretty bad,” he told AAP. “Thumb … it doesn’t look great. I really feel for him.”
Kuhnemann is due to fly out to Dubai for a pre-Test training camp alongside Labuschagne on Sunday. His absence would increase the prospect of a shock debut for allrounder Cooper Connolly.
Connolly spins the ball away from the right-hander like Kuhnemann and is highly rated by Steven Smith – interim captain in Sri Lanka – despite not yet owning a first-class wicket. Right-arm offspinners Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy are already part of the touring party.
Uncapped West Australian offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli, New South Wales legspinner Tanveer Sangha and Queensland’s Mitchell Swepson are among those pushing for a late call-up to the squad if Kuhnemann is ruled out.
Kuhnemann played three Tests in Australia’s 2023 tour of India, his style proving effective in sub-continental conditions as he claimed nine wickets, including 5 for 16 in the second Test.
Starved of Sheffield Shield opportunities given he was stuck behind Swepson at Queensland, Kuhnemann opted to move to Tasmania this season. It paid off, his 18 wickets in six games the most of any spinner in the competition as he pressed his case for a spot in the XI in Galle later this month.
“It’s someone I’m close to and he’s grown so much with his bowling and in Sri Lanka, he’s probably one of the first picked over there,” Labuschagne said. “I’m really gutted.”
Labuschagne tuned up for the tour with a BBL-best 77 from 44 balls, anchoring the innings before Hurricanes chased down their 201-run target on the final ball.
“I’m pretty confident, clear on my plans for how I’ll go about it,” he said of the spin test awaiting. “So it’s about cleaning that up in Dubai first.
“You can’t put your finger down on one thing; you need different options because in the subcontinent, you hit one good sweep and there’s two or three guys out there. So you trust your defence, trust your sweep and your game and mix it all together.”

Thurstan recover thanks to sixth wicket stand, Shevan scores second century
Under 19 Division I Cricket
by Reemus Fernando
Table leaders St. Thomas’ College Matara rocked Thurstan top order batting line up (14/4 and 52/5) before the sixth wicket pair of Rachintha de Silva (70) and Pathum Dananjaya (66) put on a stand of 117 runs to revive the innings in the Under 19 Division I Tier ‘B’ tournament match at Thurstan ground on Thursday.
The St. Thomas’ new ball bowlers did well to take advantage of the conditions as they rattled the top four batsmen for 14 runs before the sixth wicket pair repaired the damage for the home team to post 229 runs.
At Campbell Park, Arosha Sithumina anchored the top order with an unbeaten 70 for Devapathiraja to reach 149 for two wickets at stumps in reply to Wesley’s 258.
In a traditional match between De Mazenod and Gurukula at Kandana, the home team posted 214 runs thanks largely to a captain’s knock of 123 runs by Shevan Menusha. The wicketkeeper batsman scored 20 fours in his 205-ball knock. It is the second century scored by Menusha this season.
At Wattala, St. Anthony’s reached 225 for seven wickets before bad light forced an early end to the day’s play in the match against Dharmaraja.

Extra ODI added to Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka
An extra ODI has been added to Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka which will provide the visitors additional preparation for the Champions Trophy.
The two matches will now take place on February 12 and 14 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and will be day games.
The first of the games begins just two days after the scheduled fifth day of the second Test in Galle so it remains to be seen how many players featuring in that match can turnaround for the one-dayer if the Test goes the distance.
However, Australia have nine players in their preliminary Champions Trophy squad who aren’t part of the Test series, including captain Pat Cummins and fellow quick Josh Hazlewood.
But Cummins’ participation remains uncertain as he is carrying an ankle injury which he played with during the India Test series.
Australia’s ODI players are expected to arrive in Sri Lanka around the start of the second Test. Their first match in the Champions Trophy is against England on February 22 followed by South Africa on February 25 and Afghanistan on February 28.
The first semi-final will take place in Dubai on March 4 with the second in Lahore on March 5 following confirmation of the hybrid model due to India not traveling to Pakistan. The final will be on March 9, in either Dubai or Lahore depending on whether India qualify.
