Work on rehabilitating 17,311 km of roads to be completed by end of this month
Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando yesterday said that projects had been commenced to complete construction of 17,311.27 km in 12,336 roads by the end of the second quarter of this year under the project of developing 100,000 km of rural roads under the Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour programme of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The work had commenced with the target of completing development of 25,000 km of roads by the end of the year, the Minister said.
He said that under the project, rural roads, linking the main arterial roads, would be developed to ease their connection to the expressways, and alternative routes that help reach cities would also be developed. The project has been planned so meticulously to prevent any damage to the environment.
The project had also been planned to employ the highest standards to ensure their sustenance and durability and benefit for the road users, the Minister said.
