Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda has flayed Jaffna District lawmaker C.V. Wigneswaran for taking a hostile stand at the inauguration of the 9th parliament and during the debate on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s policy statement on August 20 and 21, respectively.

The EPDP leader said the Tamil community wouldn’t benefit from such attacks on the government. Retired Supreme Court judge and leader of the Tamil Makkal Thesiya Kutani (TMTK) Wigneswaran alleged that the President proposed a government of Sinhala Buddhists by the Sinhala Buddhists for the Sinhala Buddhists.

Addressing a gathering in Jaffna, Ministern Devananda assured the community he would uphold their faith expressed at the recently concluded election. The EPDP won two seats in the North.

Acknowledging that MP Wigneswaran had received a lot of coverage from a section of the mainstream Tamil media as well as social media, he asked whether such talk would help the Tamil community to realise their aspirations and solve problems.

Minister Devananda emphasised the importance of working with the government especially at a time it enjoyed an overwhelming mandate and a near two-thirds majority, which all experts predicted was impossible. (SF)
