US sanctions Indian firm in consortium managing Sri Lanka’s Mattala Airport

The United States has sanctioned India-based Shaurya Aeronautics Private Limited, part of a consortium with Russia’s Airports of Regions Management Company to oversee Sri Lanka’s Mattala Airport, official data reveals.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on Shaurya last week, among 275 individuals and entities supplying Russia with critical technology and equipment, supporting its military efforts. This action targets extensive sanctions evasion networks across multiple jurisdictions, including India, China, and Turkey, as well as Russian importers within the military-industrial sector.

The Shaurya-Airports of Regions joint venture had secured a 30-year contract under the former Sri Lankan government to manage the Chinese-built airport. Despite U.S. concerns over sanctioned stakeholders in the Russian firm, the agreement proceeded after Sri Lankan authorities found no substantial evidence to support the claims.
