United Nations Sri Lanka has expressed concern over reports of violence in the country, resident coordinator Hanaa Singer-Hamdy said on Friday (01), after a massive protest outside President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence over Sri Lanka’s prevailing economic crisis turned violent.

In a tweet posted Friday afternoon, Singer-Hamdy called for restraint from all groups. The Tweet said: “We are monitoring developments and are concerned by reports of violence in #SriLanka. Calling for restraint from all groups.”

The government of Sri Lanka has accused “extremist” elements affiliated with opposition parties of hijacking the protest and turning it violent — an allegation contested by some of the protestors.
