UN chief finally calls for a ceasefire
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has finally called for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in the Israel-Gaza war, 12 days after it began and following an Israeli attack on a hospital in Gaza that killed at least 500 people.
The humanitarian ceasefire was needed for both of these appeals to be met, Guterres added.
The UN Security Council will vote on a Brazilian-drafted resolution today (18) that calls for humanitarian pauses in the conflict between Israel and Palestinian fighters Hamas to allow humanitarian aid access to the Gaza Strip.
The 15-member council had initially been due to vote on Monday on the Brazilian draft, but it was postponed 24 hours to allow more time to negotiate. The US then pushed for a further delay as President Joe Biden visits Israel today.
