Two employees of the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake were arrested yesterday for stealing 14 gemstones that were to be transported via airmail from Sri Lanka to Sydney, Australia.
Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the gemstones had been handed over to the airport by the Central Mail Exchange to be transported to Australia on 26 April, 2023.
A complaint has been filed with the Australian Federal Police in this regard after which an investigation was launched by the Katunayake Airport Police.
Police said CCTV footage at the airmail storage room at the airport revealed two employees stealing the gemstones.
The suspects were arrested by the Airport Police yesterday, and the stolen gemstones recovered.
The suspects are aged 23 and 25 years and are residents of Tholangamuwa and Hasalaka. They would be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court, police said.
