KANDY –

Garbage, weighing several tonnes, was collected from the Mahaweli River on Thursday in a joint operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority and the Army, from Katugastota to the Victoria reservoir.

The operation was led by the engineer in charge of the Victoria dam, Wasantha Ehelapitiya.

A significant amount of garbage collected in the Pingaoya, Akurana and Ambatenna areas is dumped into the river at Katugastota.

Ehelapitiya said a lot of the garbage was thrown into the river by those living on its banks.
