Telltale Deluge
By Lynn Ockersz
They lifted the boy’s limp body,
Amid screams of acute heartache,
Of close relatives and friends,
From a death trap in flood waters,
In the heart of the historic town,
By ‘ordinary folk’ coming together,
In a glowing gesture of self-help,
But the boy had breathed his last,
Leaving behind many a telltale sign,
Of run-down provincial spheres,
Living on lean decentralized funds,
While snaking highways and palaces,
With more than a whiff of ill-got dollars,
Hold the isle in a strangulating clasp,
Thanks to highbrow politicians’ wiles,
But the lesson yielded runs thus:
It’s a matter of ‘sink or swim’,
For the powerless of the land.
