Sri Lanka rejects the UNHRC resolution (51/1) against Sri Lanka, Cabinet Spokesman and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said yesterday.

Addressing the media in Colombo, Herath said, “We do not accept the UNHRC resolution. We are not a member of the council, and we can’t vote, but we will convey our position clearly,” he said.

“Sri Lanka has a new President, and its people will elect a new Parliament in November,” he said.

“We are a government committed to protecting human rights of all Sri Lankans and our manifesto contains very progressive human rights protection mechanisms. However, we need more time to carry out that task. We also don’t agree with most of the things contained in this resolution. We will inform our position to the UNHRC, today (09),” he said. (RK)
