Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday inaugurated the first ever power plant that produces electricity from solid waste incineration.

The plant is expected to utilise 700 tonnes of garbage daily and add 10 megawatts to the national grid. The Colombo Municipal Council’s solid waste division would supply garbage on a daily basis for the project. Aitken Spence Group has spent Rs. 15 billion to construct the plant in Kerawalapitiya. The group is confident of converting between 600 and 800 tonnes of Colombo waste into energy.

Power and Energy Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said that it was a crucial moment in the energy revolution here. “What we are doing today is not just reviving the national power system.
