Spirited Bangladesh complete stunning whitewash
A steady batting performance followed by a clinical display with the ball in the second half of the chase helped Bangladesh clean sweep the T20I series with a 16-run win in the third T20I in Dhaka on Tuesday (March 14). Litton Das’s 57-ball 73 and Najmul Hossain’s 47 not out off 36 helped Bangladesh post a competitive 158/2. A 95-run partnership between Dawid Malan (53 off 47) and Jos Buttler (40 off 31) kept England in the hunt but Bangladesh picked up six wickets for 28 runs in the latter half of the chase to seal a famous whitewash.

St Sylvester’s, Hemamali Youth Boxing Champions
St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy and Hemamali Girl’s College, Kandy emerged champions in the BASL Youth Boxing Championship to retain the General Jagath Jayasuriya Challenge Trophy conducted by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka at Sahas Uyana, Kandy.
Stubbs Shield champions St Sylvester’s won a total of nine medals inclusive of four gold medals, three silver and two bronze medals while Hemamali won five gold medals and one silver medal.
Formerly a tournament for Cadet boxers, this tournament is for 17-18 year olds.
Royal College, Colombo were runners up in the boys division also winning a total of nine medals comprising two gold, two silver and five bronze medals.
Sripalee College, Horana were runners-up in the girls category winning a total of eight medals consisting of four gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals.
IND Thathsara of Nalanda College, Colombo who won the fly weight (51kg) title defeating Sylvestrian PGTP Maduwantha was adjudged the Best Boxer (men) while KMN Sandeepani of Hemamali who won the fly weight (52kg) title was picked as the Best Boxer (women).
There were outstanding performances from Stubbs Shield Best Boxer Royalist Thenuwan Meegalle who outpointed Sylvestrian TL Dharmapriya in the feather weight (57kg); Best Boxer at this meet last year Sylvestrian KGSK Heshan who won a tough duel against Sri Lanka junior international and medallist A Azil of Zahira College, Colombo in the light weight (60kg) final; and Trinitian Shezan Odayar who scored a stunning first round win over another Sri Lanka junior international Royalist Malith Bandara in the middle weight (75kg) final.
NM Abdulrahaman (54kg), JMT Deshan (63.5kg) and SGM Azhar (71kg) were the other gold medal winners for St Sylvester’s.
All Island National School Games Best Boxer and Best Boxer at this meet last year Chathuni Siriwardena (50kg), HGS Sewwandi (57kg), UGSD Perera (63kg) and AMU Devindi (81kg) were the other gold medal winners for Hemamali.

Air Force women’s team dominate at Defence Services Taekwondo Championship
The Sri Lanka Air Force emerged as the undisputed champions of the women’s category at the 13th Defence Services Taekwondo Championship 2024/2025 concluded successfully at the Gymnasium of SLAF Base Katunayake last week.
The women’s team secured an impressive haul of five gold, two silver and nine bronze medals. The SLAF men’s team settled for the runners-up position with a tally of four gold, one silver and one bronze medal. Aircraftman Prabashwara DPGAM was recognized for his exceptional performance and was awarded the prestigious title of ‘Best Player’ of the tournament.

Mahanama crush St. Servatius’ to take tournament leader title

Mahanama recorded crushing innings and 75 runs victory over St. Servatius’ as they established themselves as the leaders of the Under 19 Division I Tier ‘A’ cricket tournament at the Bloomfield ground on Sunday.
Centuries by Chamika Heenatigala and Sithum Vihanga set the stage for their second outright victory of the season as they posted 360 for six wickets declared on the second day morning.
Anuka Wijewardana, Sithum Vihaga and Chamika Heenatigala then shared bowling honours to dismiss the team from Matara twice.
Deciding to bat first, Heenatigala and Vihanga put on 187 runs for the fourth wicket. Heenatigala scored 106 runs (in 171 balls) inclusive of eight fours and a six. Vihanga’s 102 (in 136 balls) was inclusive of two fours and six sixes.
Mahanama are the only team to score two outright victories in the Tier ‘A’ tournament and have also registered two first innings wins so far in the tourney. The unbeaten team are the leading team in the top tier irrespective of the group they are in.
For St. Servatius’, it was their second outright defeat.
In the other matches on Sunday, Trinity took control against Maliyadewa at Asgiriya and St. Thomas’ Matara took first innings lead against Moratu Vidyalaya.
