Speaker elected unanimously

Sri Lanka’s 10th Parliament, at its first sitting yesterday morning, elected NPP MP Asoka Sapumal Ranwala as the new Speaker of Parliament unanimously.Ranwala’s name was proposed by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and seconded by Minister Vijitha Herath. No other names were proposed.

NPP MPs Dr. Rizvie Salih and Hemali Weeraseekara were elected Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairperson of Committees, respectively.

During the inaugural session, the Speaker of Parliament announced that President Anura Kumara Dissanayke had officially recognised SJB MP Sajith Premadasa as the Leader of the Opposition.

National Democratic Front (NDF) national list MP Ravi Karunanayake too was present in Parliament.The first session of the 10th Parliament commenced at 10 am. President Dissanayake delivered the government’s policy statement tat 11.30 a.m.
