SL to lodge a complaint with Basel Convention Office

Ukraine agro waste scandal
By Aruna Boghawatte
Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has instructed Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe to lodge a complaint with the Basel Convention Office regarding the import of 28 containers of agro waste by a private company.
According to the Basel Convention, the export of agricultural waste from one country to another is strictly prohibited. Sri Lanka is also a signatory to the Basel Convention.
The Minister said that the containers had been imported on the pretext of importing coriander.
“It has to be found out whether these containers containing agricultural waste were deliberately imported into the country by the private sector or they have been deceived,” Minister Amaraweera said.
The Minister said that he had instructed the Central Environmental Authority to look into the statement made by the importer that they had been deceived.
