SJB condemns violence against women
SJB MPs yesterday staged a protest in Parliament against violence against women.
The MPs wore orange colour ribbons around their arms and had stickers on their attires reading: ‘Stop Violence against Women.’
The MPs were protesting against remarks made by SLPP MP Janaka Tissakuttiarachchi about MP Rohini Wijeratne and the Opposition Leader’s wife, in Parliament, on 20 November. MP Wijeratne told Parliament that the protest was to mark ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’ which fell yesterday.
She said : “It is reported that 20% of Sri Lankan women go through some sort of abuse. When such things take place, nothing is done. This is the same in parliament. No one is punished for such actions. Issuing warnings is not enough to prevent the abuses. Because of the lax attitude, perpetrators walk free when women are harassed and abused by them.”
