SJB blames paper marking impasse on Education Ministry
Teachers have not come forth to mark GCE AL exam papers because the Ministry of Education has not paid them for paper marking for two years, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Rohini Kumari Wijerathna said yesterday issuing a press release.
The SJB MP said that the Minister of Education had alleged that a group of university lecturers are sabotaging paper marking.
“Let’s assume that it’s true. Then it’s the responsibility of the Ministry to find alternatives. Holding exams, marking papers and
issuing results is the responsibility of the examinations department. It’s not the responsibility of a trade union to run exams,” she said.
The SJB MP added that the exams department now does not have space to store exam papers and that this is a main reason preventing it from holding the GCE OL exams.
“The stores are already full of GCE AL exam papers. Over 100,000 children who did AL exams are now in limbo. Some students go for foundation courses after OLs. Now they are also stuck. The government has placed the future of millions of students in jeopardy,” he said.
