Showers in Western coastal areas, Eastern and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara and Polonnaruwa districts

Weather forecast for 23 May 2023 issued at 12.00 noon on 22 May 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Eastern and Uva provinces and in Polonnaruwa district during the evening or night. A few showers will occur in Western coastal areas and in Galle and Matara districts during the morning too.

Winds will be south-westerly over sea area around the island and speed will be (20-30) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (40-45) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and in the sea areas off the coast extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times.  The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle will be fairly rough

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR 16 APRIL 2026
Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 16 April 2026. by the Department of Meteorology

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Northcentral and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kurunegala districts during the early hours of the morning.

A few showers may occur in the coastal areas of  the Western and Southern provinces and Puttalam district during the morning while showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, Uva and North-western provinces after 1.00 pm.

Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa province and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fair weather will prevail over the other parts of the island.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Eastern
and Southern provinces and in Monaragala district.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
