Showers in six provinces and several districts today [24th January 2025]
WEATHER FORECAST FOR 24 JANUARY 2025

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces and in Badulla district during the morning.
Several spells of showers will occur in Uva and Southern provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts. A few showers may occur in Northern and North-Central provinces and in Trincomalee district. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Kurunegala district in the evening or night and fairly heavy showers about 50 mm can be expected at some places.
Fairly strong winds of (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Eastern slope of the central hills and Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Matale district.
WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coasts extending from Batticaloa to Colombo via, Hambantota and Galle.
Winds will be north-easterly and speed will be (25-35) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota may be fairly rough at times but strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

The Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, North-western, Northern and North-central provinces and in Monaragala district.
The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.
ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in the Sabaragamuwa province and in Colombo, Kaluthara, Galle, and Matara districts after 2.00 pm. Dry and warm weather will prevail over the other parts of the island.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
