Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 04 November 2023 by the Department of Meteorology

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the morning.

Showers will occur in the Northern and Eastern provinces during the morning  while showers or thundershowers will occur over most places of the island after 01.00 p.m. Heavy showers above 100mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa and North-Central provinces and in Mannar, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu districts while fairly heavy showers above 50mm are likely elsewhere.

Winds will be South-easterly or variable in direction and wind speed will be (20-30) kmph.

The sea areas around the island will be slight but temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Issued at 05.30 a.m. on 15 February 2026 by the Department of Meteorology

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

Showers will occur at times in the Central and Uva provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Hambantota districts. A few showers may occur in the Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee district. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 1.00 p.m. Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in the Rathnapura, Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Advisory for Severe Lightning Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 11.30 a.m. 14 February 2026 valid for the period until 11.30 p.m. 14 February 2026

Thundershowers accompanied with severe lightning are likely to occur at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Badulla and Nuwara-Eliya districts after 1.00 p.m.  There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.

The General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.

ACTION REQUIRED:

The Department of Meteorology advises that people should:
 Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
 Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms.
 Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms.
 Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc.
 Beware of fallen trees and power lines.
 For emergency assistance contact the local disaster management authorities.
