Showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts

GENERAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR NEXT 36 HOURS

The low pressure area off the northern coast of Sri Lanka is likely to move northwestwards across the northern Tamil Nadu coast.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and  North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Fairly heavy showers about 75 mm are likely at some places in these areas.  Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Uva province and Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 1.00 p.m.

Fairly strong winds of about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills and in Western, Northern, North-central, North-western and Southern provinces and in Trincomalee district.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers

Warm Weather Advisory
Issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology at 3.30 p.m. on 11 March 2026, valid for 12 March 2026.

The public are warned that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at
some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces and in Monaragala and Mannar districts.

The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.

Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned in the above table and it is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.

ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.
Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the early hours of the morning.

A few showers may occur in the Uva province and in Batticaloa, Ampara, and Hambantota districts.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the  Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts after 2.00 pm. Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm can be expected at some places.
Mainly fair weather will prevail elsewhere over the island.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers

A few showers are likely in the Northern and Eastern provinces. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Uva provinces and in Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts in the evening or night. Dry weather will prevail elsewhere over the island.
