Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Anil Jayantha Fernando, announced on Wednesday (25) that government employees, including teachers, would receive a salary increase next year.Fernando told the media that the details of the salary increments would be outlined in the 2025 budget proposals.

“We are committed to raising the salaries of state employees, not for political gain, but because it is widely recognised that people are facing immense difficulties due to the current economic situation. The existing salaries are inadequate,” he said.

Fernando emphasised that the salary hike was a pressing necessity. “The country’s economy suffered severe damage under the previous government. As a responsible administration, we cannot merely ask people to tighten their belts and wait until 2026. We are taking a different approach,” he said.

He assured that the government is focused on addressing the financial struggles of the people. “People can hold onto the assurance of a definite salary increase next year,” Fernando added.
