Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP), led by former Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, has decided to contest the forthcoming parliamentary selection under the ‘Gas Cylinder’ symbol.

Political sources said that final preparations were being made to hand over nominations today and tomorrow. The grouping comprised former SLPP parliamentarians who backed President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who unsuccessfullly contested the last presidential election as an independent candidate. Sources said that Wickremesinghe backed those contesting under the ‘Gas Cylinder’ symbol though he was not in the fray.

In some districts, the Gunawardena-led alliance would be contesting under different symbols, sources said.

According to the Election Commission, by yesterday (09) a total of 33 independent groups and political parties had submitted nominations to contest the 2024 General Election.

Sources said some ex-SLPPers would contest on the SJB ticket while some will contest on the Sarvajana Balaya ticket.

The SLPP has been able to retain less than 20 ex-MPs.
