Russia suggests new sources of power generation like nuclear to meet Lanka’s electricity needs

Power Minister Gamini Lokuge meets Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Yury B. Materiy

Sri Lanka should explore the possibility of adopting low cost power generation methods in addition to renewable methods to meet the country’s growing energy demand and provide relief to consumers, Russian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Yury B. Materiy said.

The Russian Ambassador said so while participating in an official discussion with the Minister of Power Gamini Lokuge at the Ministry yesterday.

The Ambassador said that Sri Lanka could be assisted in exploring the possibility of generating low cost electricity through new sources such as nuclear power.

Power Minister Gamini Lokuge said that the energy sector in Sri Lanka was currently focusing on renewable resources and that the Ministry was focusing on the goals set by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to increase the contribution of renewable energy to 70% of the national grid by the year 2030.

Lokuge expressed his appreciation of the attention paid by the Russian government to Lanka’s needs.

State Minister of Solar, Wind and Hydro Power Generation Project Development Duminda Dissanayake and Secretary to the Ministry of Power Wasantha Perera were also present at the discussion.
