Roller skating… in Sri Lanka!
Yes, I guess that would surprise many! In fact, it did surprise me – roller skating…in Sri Lanka!
When I was in the States, years ago, I was quite amused to see these guys and girls merrily roller skating – in New York and Washington DC.
While some found the payments, to their liking, to roller skate, those who did use the road, were conscious of the fact that they had to obey the road rules, and I saw them coming to a halt, when the traffic lights indicated red.
It’s a form of recreational activity, as well as a sport, and can also be used as a form of transportation.
Roller skates are shoes, or bindings that fit onto shoes, that are worn to enable the wearer to roll along, on wheels.
Well, I’m told, that roller skating is catching on, in Colombo – as a sport! And, surprise, surprise, as a sport, it’s not new to our scene!
A very keen reader of my pages, in The Island, Samadhi Wandana Kothalawala, told me that a Roller Skating competition was held recently, where she was a participant.
She says this particular competition was organized for the seventh consecutive year by Torrential Roller Sports Club, under the supervision of the National Roller Skating Association of Sri Lanka.
She went on to say that the coach/trainer /founder is Lasantha Pramuditha Silva, a former National Champion, who was the team leader of the Sri Lanka Roller Skating squad to the 18th Asian Games.
The competition attracted 55 competitors – from four to 68 years of age.
Samadhi says she loves to do things differently and is now toying with the idea of doing martial arts.
He other interests include hip-hop dancing, acting, and modelling.
And, Samadhi has graced our Glam Scene, on quite a few occasions, and also did a Chi-Chat with us.
