Rise of Varadona Players

Diego Maradona is remembered the world over for his unquestioned glory in football. Those two goals he scored against England in 1986, winning the World Cup will never be forgotten, especially that second goal that beat all the English players, so soon after that “Hand of God” goal he scored with a touch and twist of his hand, which the referee did not see. Diego Maradona will no doubt bring courage to our own footballers, who await a good rise  of the game, at least to what it was in the late 1930s and early 40s.

But the life of Diego Maradona outside the field of football, is certainly of more importance to the current politics and social life in Sri Lanka. The people of Argentina have pushed aside that part of Maradona’s life, as they came in their thousands to pay him their last respects after his death. They and the whole world will remember him for his stunning and leading action in the football field.

The politics and corruption of today, makes Diego Maradona the holder of special glory to the leaders in the wave of corruption that is certainly sweeping the country today. They are not impressed by his football kicks, but by his kicks on alcohol and drugs, that gave him a wholly different play in the Games of the Crooked.

His support for the leftwing politics in Argentina and Latin America, where he even had his own boo against US President Bush, is certainly not the stuff of our so-called leftists of today in Sri Lanka. The out-of-the-football-field achievements of Maradona, is the stuff that is followed by our Lotus Leaders. It is the stuff of a one time  so-called protest faster Wimal Weerawansa, who does not know why the pandemic locked up people cannot use the Rs. 5000 favour for a whole month.

Maradona’s goals outside the football field must also be giving great support for the new kings of arrack from Wayamba, and those who destroyed the historic Royal Assembly Hall there. These are not Maradonas but “Varadonas” –  those who excel in their “Varada” or wrongs.

There  are many such Varadonas in the power of the Lotus Flower today, such as the destroyers of forest land – Vananthara Kelinnan – who are having a field day with the mounting load  of Gazettes that are fast becoming a forest of their own.

Cabinet changes are swift and simple, now that the 20A has been passed, and a younger Rajapaksa brother swearing in an elder Rajapaksa brother is the part of the Rajavasala Varada, the fabric of power politics today.

The number of politicians being released from their Remand Custody, and the cases against the Lotus Flower politicos being dropped or abandoned by various levels of the judiciary, is fast becoming  a hallmark of the Varadona play in the twists of governance and the law.

Today’s parliament is fast becoming a Hall of the Varadona Shouters, with journalists kept out, huge shouts against the Speaker being called a ‘Lokka’, and echoes of a vulgarity in the shouts from the 20A winning side, led largely by those who dashed chairs, sprayed chilli powder mixed water, assaulted MPs and policemen too, in the cause of their own crooked democracy.

These are the Varadona players who are trying their best to have Varadona Dominance globally, much more that Maradona had dominance in football.

The Varadona Players with their Lotus Flower dominance are fast becoming the actual power players in Sri Lanka. The witchcraft red threads round their wrists, in addition to white pirith threads, and other divinity threads from devales and kapurales, are giving a new decor and style to these rising leaders of crooked politics and power.

They are even widening the Mirihana Road and Jubilee Kanuva Para from Nugegoda, removing the Jubilee Kanuva too, which gave the name to that junction, and marked a celebration of Queen Victoria’s days in colonial power. We are reminded of how the Queen Victoria statue was removed from the Queen’s House gardens, and placed somewhat behind the Colombo Museum. That  is the Rajapaksa Balaya, wanting their own jubilee celebration of Pavul Balaya of the Varadona Players. The Maradona memories can remain in Argentina, we will soon have many Varadona memories to celebrate with the daily chanting of the Varadona Suthraya, and a Rajapaksa Motorway without any Jubilee Kanuva distraction.
