Weather forecast issued at 05.30 a.m. on 10 January 2025 by the Department of Meteorology
Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and Uva provinces during the morning.
Rainy condition is expected to enhance over Northern, North-central, and Eastern provinces and in Matale and Kandy districts in the next few days from today.
Showers will occur at times in Northern, North-central, Eastern, and Uva provinces and in Matale and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Fairly heavy showers above 75mm can be expected at some places. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Kandy district during the afternoon or night.
Fairly strong winds of (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Northern, Eastern, North-central and North-western provinces and in Hambantota district.
Winds will be north-easterly in the sea areas, and speed will be (30-40) kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast, extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Puttalam,
Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee.
The sea areas off the coasts extending from Colombo to Hambantota via Puttalam, Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee will be fairly rough at times.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages

On the apparent northward relative motion of the sun, it is going to be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka during 05th to 14th of April in this year.
The nearest areas of Sri Lanka over which the sun is overhead today (10th) are Hatthikuchchi, Kalankuttiya, Halmillewa, Ipalogama, Palugaswewa and Habarana at about 12:11 noon.

Showers will occur at times in Western and Southern provinces and in Puttalam district while showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva provinces and in Ampara, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts during the afternoon or night. Fairly heavy rainfall of above 50 mm is likely at some places in Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Central provinces and in Ampara district.
The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Heat index at ‘Caution level’ in Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western, Western provinces and Monaragala district today [09]

The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has issued a Warm Weather Advisory for 09 April 2025
The public are warned that the Heat index, the temperature felt on human body is likely to increase up to ‘Caution level’ at some places in Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western, and Western provinces and in Monaragala district.
The Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on your body. This is not the forecast of maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology for the next day period and prepared by using global numerical weather prediction model data.
Effect of the heat index on human body is mentioned below is prepared on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.
ACTION REQUIRED
Job sites: Stay hydrated and takes breaks in the shade as often as possible.
Indoors: Check up on the elderly and the sick.
Vehicles: Never leave children unattended.
Outdoors: Limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated. Dress: Wear lightweight and white or light-colored clothing.
