Public Security Ministry gets ready with countrywide ‘crime prevention wave’
Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (retd.) Dr. Sarath Weerasekara said, on Saturday, that his Ministry was planning to implement a one-week long countrywide ‘crime prevention wave’ operation combining the Special Task Force, Army and the Police to crack down on organized crime, drug trafficking and extortion rackets.
Speaking at a ceremony held to form Southern Province Security Committees in Matara, the Minister said that the planned special operation would be carried out with the full support of the intelligence services and the public and it was possible for people to provide information through the Police hotlines 118 and 119.
The Minister said the purpose of the operation was to enable the general public to live without any fear or suspicion.
He added that the Hotline 118 had been used by two female victims blackmailed by two males for a long time and both suspects were arrested, produced before courts and remanded.
