Public Security Minister outlines measures to eradicate drug menace at school level

Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (retd.) Sarath Weerasekara has said that his Ministry’s main objective is to create a society free from fear and it could not be achieved without eliminating the drug menace.
Minister Weerasekera was speaking at a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Education and representatives of organisations affiliated to the school community at his Ministry, the ministry sources said.
The Minister also stated that action should be taken to prevent the physical entry of narcotics into the country as a first step to eradicate the menace from society.
School teachers, parents, student leaders and various groups in the education sector should form strong committees, the Minister said adding that those committees should be created in an attractive manner to make an impact. Through those committees a social wave and social style that rejected drug addicts could be created, he pointed out.
The Minister also stressed the need to raise students’ awareness of the danger of narcotics.
Secretary to the Ministry of Public Security Major General Jagath Alwis, Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne and many other officials were also present on the occasion.
