Previous Elections Chief says not holding election a serious offence
Chairman of the National Delimitation Committee Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday said that 60 percent of expenses of an election occurred after the day of the election.
“So, the Elections Commission only needs about three billion rupees to hold the election. If the Treasury doesn’t pay, the Commission can postpone the election after setting a specific day,” he said,
The Previous Elections Commission Chief Deshapriya said that in his personal opinion, postponing an election, or not holding one, was a serious offence in terms of natural justice.
“So I hope the local council election will be held on March 09, as scheduled,” he said.
Deshapriya said if the current administration was allowed to delay elections due to alleged economic issues, it would set a very bad precedent.
